Peyronie’s Disease Treatment
In North Carolina and beyond, Dr. Ryan Terlecki is the foremost authority on treatment for Peyronie’s disease, or abnormal curvature of the penis. In a small percentage of men, the condition has been known to improve over time. However, if the condition does not correct itself, there are a number of treatment options available:
Medical injection therapy: This may be used to soften plaque in an attempt to lessen curvature when combined with manipulation of the penis. Administered in a series of injections, medication such as Xiaflex®, the first and only nonsurgical treatment for Peyronie’s disease approved by the FDA, is injected directly into the plaque.
Surgical Options for Peyronie’s Disease
- Plication: This simple, outpatient procedure involves using internal sutures to fold the tissue on the side opposite the plaque (scar) to allow correction of curvature.
- Penile Prosthesis: In this procedure, an inflatable penile prosthesis is implanted to straighten the penis and increase its rigidity. This method is considered the best treatment option for patients with both erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease.
- Grafting: Although also done as an outpatient procedure, this surgery is more advanced and involves disrupting and possibly removing the scar, and then sewing a tissue graft in that area to cover the underlying erectile issue. This type of repair is typically done for curvture considered more extensive that that considered for plication.
